About P-Tal

Rating:
5/5

P-TAL seeks to revitalize the fading art form of the indigenous Thathera people of Jandiala Guru, Amritsar, which is home to India’s only UNESCO-listed craft form. Jandiala Guru’s Thatheras is a community of talented artisans who specialize in the conventional method of pounding copper and brass plates into traditional utensils. Jandiala Guru’s crafts colony was founded during the time of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1883), a prominent 19th-century Sikh Monarch who encouraged skilled craftspeople from Kashmir to reside in the heartland of his empire in Punjab.

P-TAL intends to revitalize the fading craft of Thatheras across India with a three-pronged approach: artisan institutionalization, creative education and training, and access to markets using modern methodologies.

Values

1. P-TAL has already been striving to educate metalwork to the youth of today to secure the craft’s continuation. The artists did not want their kids to be subjected to the mistreatment they had endured. As a result, they kept them at bay. However, individuals as young as 25 are increasingly joining their parents.

2. Furthermore, the youth who lost their occupations during COVID-19 learned the importance of familial handicrafts. They also have greater flexibility in contemporary design and aesthetics and may even propose their own.

3. In addition to her Amritsar community, P-TAL is now working with metal smiths in Jagadhri (Haryana), Jaipur, and Indore. Each artisan has their preferences. Some people prefer to make vessels, while others prefer to make flower pots and decorative objects.
